Iron & steel TMT rebars provides the structural strength, these Iron rebars have various strength grades
TMT - stands for Thermo-Mechanically Treated bars.
Two most crucial elements of any RCC constructions are TMT rebars and Cement. The structural strength and sanility depends on these. One must choose the option wisely with proper testing & brand value regardless of manufacturer.
BIS: Beaurau of Indian Standards 1786/2008 various grades are provided with physical and chemical properties

Iron & Steel are basically divided into 2 types
- Primary Steel : Manufactured directly from Iron ore.
- Secondary Steel : Manufactured through recycling i.e by melting Iron Scrap.
Normally Primary steel offers non trade or project Iron & Steel
Major area in retails are covered with secondary steel, in bigger projects, or load bearing projects, or even banquets, schools,
cinema halls, Malls, high rise buildings, commercial buildings its always recommendable to use primary steel
In bulk order rates difference is minimum or no difference.
Actually due to high strength grades of primary steel, there is savings in quantity of steel, due to which there are savings in terms
of cost.
- Technology: TMT bars manufactured with use of latest technology, now Thermex’ or ‘Tempcore’ TMT Rebars are the latest one
- Strength Grade High Strength grade may be Fe500, 500D etc
- Ductility & malleability – Rebar should have high strength and at the same time high ductility, normally Primary TMT Rebar’s have high strength & Ductility
- Percentage of Sulphur & Phosphorous: As per IS: 1786/2008 should Phosphorous % should not exceed 0.040 and Sulphur % should not 0.040 and combine strength should not exceed 0.075 % for Grade 500D
- Carbon : percentage of carbon should not exceed 0.25%
- Elongation: atleast 14 %, 18 % or above are better.
- Pull over test: ribs on the TMT rebars must pass pull over test
- Seismic zone: check the status of site location in accordance to earthquake prone area, in case the location is in seismic 4 or 5 zone then Primary steel 500D is must.
- Welding ability should be high
- Moreover one can check the fire resistance and corrosion resistance.
